Northville Downs Property Sparks Heated Exchange

The meeting ended with a motion to table the discussion until the commission’s next meeting on February 15. The commission’s contract with the Northville Community Center, where the meeting was held, expired at 10:30 p.m. The meeting included a 23-minute presentation by city planner Sally Elmiger, an approximately 70-minute site plan presentation by Hunter Pasteur, a 32-minute period when commissioners asked clarifying questions to the developers and roughly 48 minutes of public comment regarding the site plan. Hunter Pasteur CEO Randy Wertheimer addressed the commission and stated that ending the meeting without a vote was unacceptable. Commissioners countered that more time was needed for further discussion.
Google Joins Ford as Founding Member of Michigan Central

Ford has emphasized that the campus will be a collaborative district where other companies will work on mobility products and services. Google’s involvement will focus on workforce development for local high school students and job seekers. It will also provide cloud technology for Michigan Central’s mobility projects, including a new Code Next Lab to teach computer science to high school students. Google is also partnering with local nonprofits to offer a career 3-6 month certification designed to equip participants with skills for in-demand fields. Ford will recognize the certificate and consider program graduates for jobs.
Rochester Community Schools To sell Historical Administration Building
/in SE Michigan /by Tracy WillisRochester Community Schools is selling a 4.43-acre parcel of land and a 133-year old historical building. The RCS Administration Building is a three-story structure that contains 89,716 square feet of gross building area. Purchase proposals must be submitted in writing by 5 p.m. on March 28. The original building was built in 1889. The last renovation of the building took place in 1988. A community committee studied options for the future of the building and its artifacts. The committee determined the process a prospective buyer will follow to bid on the property, and it’s also focused on identifying artifacts for preservation.

COVID Emergency Rental Assistance Staves Off An Eviction Tsunami

Since the initial eviction moratorium, the U.S. Treasury has paid $25 billion to states and local governments for COVID Emergency Rental Assistance. From May to August, a total of $181,821,906 has been paid out to Michigan residents. The pace of the disbursements will continue to accelerate into September, according to the MSHDA communications director. The Director of Litigation at the Legal Aid of Western Michigan estimates that applicants are waiting 1 to 2 months before receiving a check. The processing rate varies by county and ranges from 26-72%.
Detroit’s Roosevelt Park Plans Affect Vernor Highway
/in Detroit /by Tracy WillisDetroit has plans for improvements to Roosevelt Park that involve permanently closing a section of Vernor Highway. The plans will make the park safer and uninterrupted by vehicle traffic. Currently, the highway cuts through the park and a section of 15th Street in the Corktown neighborhood. A temporary closure of the highway at 17th and Newark streets will begin Tuesday. Construction will be completed in 2 phases and is expected to be complete in February 2022. Resident input is welcomed by the city, via a survey that closes on October 31.
Vacancy Increases in Detroit’s Prime Office Buildings
/in Detroit /by Tracy WillisThere’s an increase in vacancy rates in Detroit’s prime office buildings in 2021. According to a new report from the Chicago-based brokerage house JLL, there’s a 10.2% vacancy rate totaling more than 10.9 million square feet. That’s an increase from a 7.7% vacancy rate in 2019 and just under 9% in 2020. Rent also dropped 0.4%. Although 21 downtown prime office buildings comprise the vacant real estate, the Renaissance Center accounts for almost 45% of all the vacant space.
