Amazon Pivots, Cancels Warehouse Plans in Ypsilanti Township

After years of expansion in southeast Michigan, Amazon has begun scaling back by scrapping its plans for a new warehouse building in Ypsilanti Township. The plan had called for a 183,200-square-foot facility and had been dubbed “Project Yoga.” The cost of the project was $21.4 million and was to be constructed on about 30 acres of a 120-acre parcel.  Amazon has also indefinitely postponed it’s plans to build a new facility in Pittsfield Township. Amazon’s footprint in the region includes about 13 million square feet or more and includes redevelopments of the former Pontiac Silverdome site and the former Michigan State Fairgrounds property in Detroit. It’s finalizing construction on a Canton Township facility in the coming weeks.

 

Amazon Ditches Square Footage

Amazon is subleasing at lease 10 million square feet and possibly terminating leases in New York, New Jersey, Southern California and Atlanta. The figure could be as high as 30 million square feet. This is in contrast to the the company’s acquisition of 200 million square feet during the pandemic. In the Detroit area, it’s a different story. The company currently occupies or is building at least 13 million square feet. According to sources, Amazon was more deliberate in the Detroit area, as opposed to other areas where it acquired square footage where it could find it. The company also seems to be dropping smaller spaces and not mega-centers like those in the Detroit area.

 

 

Posh Storage Units Coming to Petoskey and Charlevoix

Petoskey and Charlevoix are gaining new high-end and climate-controlled storage units. Developer Aston Clark is building the Toy Box Luxury Storage Units. The warehouses will be between U.S. 31, between Petoskey and Charlevoix. Each unit will have heat and air conditioning, a bathroom, a kitchen, loft  and balcony with views of the lake. The 2,300 square foot units will be available starting May 4.  According to the Michigan Self-Storage Association, the demand has gone up for storage in Northern Michigan.
